The Eastern Cape Department of Education has delivered new water purification systems to three schools in the OR Tambo Coastal district. The handover aims to ensure that learners access clean and safe drinking water, a long-standing need in rural communities.
The initiative was carried out by the Department’s infrastructure unit in partnership with Technical Innovation Agency and Water Filters.
Three Schools Benefit
The project supported Nonesi JSS, Xhentsa SSS, and Tekwini SSS. Each school received filtration equipment designed to improve daily water quality for learners and staff.
Department officials said the intervention responds to water safety challenges raised by school leaders in the district. In addition, the systems are expected to reduce illness linked to unsafe water sources.
Community Welcomes the Initiative
Parents, principals, and school governing structure leaders attended the handover.
They described the project as a positive step that will help protect learners’ health.
School representatives said reliable access to clean water also supports teaching, hygiene, and nutrition programmes.
Commitment to Safer Learning Spaces
The Department stated that the partnership forms part of a broader effort to strengthen learning conditions in rural districts.
More schools in the region are expected to receive similar support as infrastructure assessments continue.
