Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef claims five players fell ill hours before the CAF Confederation Cup match against AS Simba.
Kaizer Chiefs’ preparations for their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round first leg took a dramatic turn after five players fell ill from suspected food poisoning in Tanzania. The incident, confirmed by co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef, left the team struggling physically before kickoff but still determined to compete.
What Happened?
Speaking after the match, Youssef revealed that several key squad members woke up experiencing severe diarrhoea and vomiting on the morning of the game.
“I have to say our players woke up with diarrhoea and vomiting before the match. I don’t know what happened with the food. Five of them were in a critical situation, and we were not sure if they could play. But I have to say congratulations to them — they fought for the team even though they were not 100% ready,” Youssef said.
The illness reportedly disrupted the team’s pre-match routine and contributed to their underwhelming performance against AS Simba in the first leg of the preliminary round on 18 October 2025.
Official Response
Kaizer Chiefs have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the incident. However, insiders suggest the club’s medical team is investigating the source of the food that caused the players’ illness.
Football authorities are expected to review the situation if a formal complaint is lodged. A CAF medical delegate was present at the match and may be called to provide a report if Chiefs pursue an official inquiry.
Community Impact
The revelation has sparked outrage among fans on social media, with many calling for stricter health and safety protocols during international fixtures. Some supporters fear potential foul play, while others emphasize the importance of better medical safeguards for players competing abroad.
As the team prepares for the second leg in Johannesburg, supporters are rallying behind the players and hoping they recover fully in time for the crucial return fixture.
