The province of the Eastern Cape is abuzz with excitement as it gears-up to receive the Netball World Cup Trophy as part of its national tour ahead of the start of the tournament which will be held in Cape Town from the 28th of July to the 6th of August 2023.
MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe will receive the trophy from Northern Cape in Colesberg next week Wednesday, thereafter it will crisscross the districts and towns of the province according to the liberation heritage route. The trophy will be in the province from the 28th of June to the 3rd of July 2023 starting from Burgersdorp and ending at the Khoisan Village, Tsitsikamma.
The tour will be coupled with activities which will see schools and clubs partake in netball activities and netball clinics. Communities around the province will get a chance to see the trophy which is on African soil for the first time. MEC Kontsiwe has pleaded with the public to support the tour by wearing their world cup supporter t-shirts.
“We saw it prudent that the trophy visits all districts in the province. That is aligned to our vision for promoting total participation. All these activities were done in a bid to promote the Netball World Cup and that includes the Netball World Cup Fridays campaign of wearing the World Cup t-shirts. Citizens are encouraged to wear their sporting gear or World Cup jerseys every Friday as part of the campaign to support this initiative,” said Kontsiwe.
