The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the European Union (EU) have entered into a groundbreaking partnership agreement that will see the EU sponsor major continental football tournaments over the next three years.
Signed today in Cairo by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe and European Commissioner for International Partnerships Mr Jozef Síkela, the agreement includes sponsorship of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 and 2027, the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, and the CAF African Schools Football Championship.
“This partnership reflects our mutual commitment to the growth of African football, school sports development, and strengthening ties between Europe and Africa,” said Dr Motsepe. He further expressed gratitude to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Commissioner Síkela for their support.
Beyond sports, the agreement aims to boost cultural, trade, and investment relations between Africa and Europe, aligning with broader EU-Africa cooperation goals.
This marks the first time the EU has directly sponsored CAF tournaments, highlighting global confidence in the potential of African football as a driver of youth empowerment and continental unity.
