On 15 October 2025, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) hosted a “No to Violence Against Women” campaign at the Nompumelelo Community Hall in East London. The campaign forms part of the City’s ongoing fight against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). It also promotes the rights and safety of women and children.
What Happened
The campaign aims to raise awareness about gender-based violence, defined as any act of harm, physical, sexual, or psychological, directed at women. The event brought together municipal officials, civil society groups, and community stakeholders to discuss prevention and support measures for survivors. Ward 15 Councilor Mcwabeni welcomed guests and thanked organizers for championing the rights of women and other marginalized groups. “We are grateful for the work you are doing, advocating for the rights of the marginalized and standing up against gender-based violence,” said Councilor Mcwabeni.
“I plead with men to stop abusing women and children. As Buffalo City, we will do everything possible to support victims of abuse.”
Official Response
Chairperson of the Women’s Caucus, Councilor Z. Mtyingizane, called for unity in ending violence against women and girls. “Today, we are here to say no to any form of violence. Our goal is to create an environment where women and girls feel safe and empowered in public spaces,” she said.
Community Impact
The event strengthened partnerships between BCMM departments and external stakeholders, including the Youth Desk, HIV and AIDS Desk, Health Compliance Unit, Fire Department, Liquor Board, SAPS, FAMSA, Bumb’ingomso, and Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre. As a result, it helped coordinate citywide efforts to prevent abuse and support survivors.
The campaign will continue through community dialogues and school outreach programs designed to promote respect, accountability, and zero tolerance for GBVF.
