The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has announced that controlled blasting will take place on the N2 between KwaBhaca and EmaXesibeni on Tuesday, 5 November 2025 at 12pm.
The road will be closed for up to 30 minutes near the blast site, located approximately 5.6km from KwaBhaca heading towards EmaXesibeni.
What Motorists Need to Know
Drivers travelling between Mthatha and Kokstad are advised to use alternative routes and factor in potential delays of up to 50 minutes.
“Motorists are asked to plan their trips accordingly and use caution,” said Kayakazi Mafuta, Acting Provincial Head of SANRAL Eastern Cape.
Alternative Routes and Delays
SANRAL recommends the following detour for both directions:
Suggested Alternative Route:
- From Kokstad, take the R56 to Matatiele via Tlokoeng, then head to Nqanqarhu
- Take the R396 to Tsolo
- Rejoin the N2 at Mthatha
Or:
- From Kokstad, take R61 via Flagstaff and Lusikisiki
- Continue to Port St Johns
- Rejoin the N2 at Mthatha
