MOUNT FRERE – The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has issued a traffic advisory notifying motorists of scheduled blasting operations on the N2 between Mount Frere and Mount Ayliff on Tuesday, 10 June 2025 at 12:00 PM.
The blasting will occur approximately 3.4 kilometres from Mount Frere, heading toward Mount Ayliff. The affected section of the road will be completely closed to traffic for up to 30 minutes while blasting activities are safely conducted.
Motorists travelling along this busy national corridor, particularly those moving between Kokstad and Mthatha, are advised to consider alternative routes to avoid delays.
Suggested Detours:
- Matatiele to Mount Fletcher Route (N2 Exit)
- Flagstaff – Lusikisiki – Port St Johns (via R61), rejoining the N2 at Mthatha
These detours may add up to 69 kilometres and approximately 50 minutes to the journey.
“Motorists are asked to plan their trips accordingly, consider alternative routes, and to use caution when making use of the road,” said Kayakazi Mafuta, SANRAL’s Acting Provincial Head in the Eastern Cape.
The agency apologised for any inconvenience and reiterated its commitment to maintaining and improving South Africa’s national road infrastructure.
