South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and public clinics clinic are some of the most visited departments in the rural areas of the Pondoland region. People that visit these offices are not always helped as quick as they hope because there are always long lines due to the demand.

On a mission to ensure that government services are taken to the people , ward 20 councillor in Bizana invited the department of health and the SASSA department to her ward at the Amos Nogxina community hall.
“We have a challenge of unemployed youth we also have the elderly. So we asked SASSA and health to bring services to the people because travelling to town to stand long lines is a challenge for most people of this ward. We wanted to make things easier for the people so they het services in their villages.” Says the councillor.
People of villages around ward 20 came out in numbers to get help with renewing their SASSA cards, registering for grants for children, the elderly and disabled individuals. And getting health services.
As the local leader of ward 20, it is my responsibility to ensure that the people of my ward get the government services they deserve. I call departments that the people of my ward need and ask them to bring the services to the people and they do. – She says.
This councillor prides herself in ensuring that the people of her ward always get all their government services whenever they need. It is not the first time that this councillor invites government departments to this ward; She has done so in the past. She says,
“It is now a normal thing in my ward to see various government departments bringing services to the people and not having people travel long distances to get help.”
This initiative by the ward 20 councillor has been well received by the people of ward 20 as they came out in numbers to receive services offered by these departments.
Ward 20 councillor has a stable relationship with the people she leads because before inviting any department she first holds talks with her people to understand what they need, and when they can be available for that department.
Both these departments and the people of the ward agreed on this day. And since some people needed both SASSA and health, the health department will come again tomorrow to finish. – Says councillor.
The residents of this ward were very pleased with this initiative. Community members expressed their happiness and said, “Since these departments have been here today I managed to fix my children’s grant issue with SASSA. Right now I’m on my way to the clinic to see an optometrist because there are doctors here as well. We are really grateful for the councillor we have, since she has been our leader it feels like all government departments belong to ward 20.” Said Thobile Maphango from Emankawini village in Bizana.
