Nineteen-year-old Mihlali Macatsha of Clarkville, Bizana finished matric in 2024 and now works full time in his family enterprise, Jali Livestock. He sells sheep at the Bizana bus rank near the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality and distributes vegetables to local street vendors, keeping a tradition he describes as a family legacy that began with his forefathers as a form of food sustainability.
Over time, Jali Livestock has expanded beyond livestock sales to include vegetables, maize, ploughing, tractor hire, truck hire and trailer hire. Although there is no formal store front, Mihlali says the business meets customers where they are on the rank and through local vendors while marketing via social media.
“I’d say that the heart of the events and ceremonies happening in Bizana starts here at Jali Livestock,” he said, noting the business regularly supplies sheep and goats for family ceremonies and funerals, and provides stock to funeral parlors including Mpithi, Sicelithemba and Nyamezela.
Mihlali believes Jali Livestock stands out through quality and healthy stock, with customers sharing positive feedback. Prices typically range from R2 000 to R3 800, depending on the size of the sheep or goat. To keep animals in good condition, the team focuses on daily feeding, clean water, nutritional support, injections where needed, and regular dipping, along with careful feed management.
