Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) has begun emergency response operations following severe storm damage across several wards in the metro.
Executive Mayor Councillor Princess Faku is conducting on-the-ground visits to assess the impact and engage affected residents. The storm hit parts of the city hard, damaging homes, public buildings, and essential services.
Wards and Areas Affected
Municipal officials confirmed that Wards 31, 34, 35, 36, 39, and 45 are among the worst affected. Other surrounding areas also reported damage.
Residents reported roof losses, flooding, fallen trees, and damaged community facilities. As a result, daily life has been disrupted in several neighbourhoods.
Elderly Residents Among the Most Vulnerable
The municipality expressed concern about elderly residents left exposed after homes were damaged. Many households remain vulnerable due to ongoing weather conditions.
In response, the Executive Mayor is distributing blankets and essential relief items to affected families. Priority is being given to the elderly and other at-risk residents.
Damage to Schools and Community Facilities
Critical infrastructure did not escape the storm. Schools, churches, and public buildings sustained damage, disrupting education and community activities.
Meanwhile, the BCMM Disaster Management Centre is working with relevant departments to assess losses and plan short- and long-term interventions.
Power and Water Disruptions Reported
The storm caused electricity and water supply interruptions in areas including Mount Coke, Mlakalaka, Ndileka, Qongqotha, and nearby communities.
Municipal technical teams are on site. They are working alongside Eskom and water services units to restore services safely and as quickly as possible.
Municipality Urges Patience and Caution
BCMM has established a coordinated response team led by Members of the Mayoral Committee and supported by ward councillors. The team is managing relief efforts at local level.
Residents are urged to remain patient while repairs continue. Access to some areas remains difficult due to storm damage.
Executive Mayor Princess Faku said the municipality has mobilised all available resources to respond urgently. She reassured residents that their safety and wellbeing remain a top priority.
BCMM will provide updates as assessments continue. Residents are encouraged to report emergencies and storm-related damage through official municipal channels.
