The Alfred Nzo District Municipality continued its food safety inspections across KwaBhaca. Three shops were closed, and six received compliance notices during the operation led by Councillor Eunice Diko, the Portfolio Head for Community Development Services.
The inspections form part of an ongoing campaign to protect consumers and ensure local shops meet health standards. Officials visited spaza shops, checked storage areas, and reviewed documentation.
Municipality Warns Non-Compliant Businesses
UMzimvubu Local Municipality’s Local Economic Development unit confirmed that a new fine schedule is awaiting approval from the Magistrate’s Court.
Once approved, the fines will apply to shops trading without valid business certificates.
Officials said the penalties aim to encourage businesses to follow proper processes and keep food safe for the public.
Plan for Quarterly Oversight
Councillor Diko recommended setting up a multi-stakeholder forum to monitor progress.
The forum would meet every quarter to review compliance levels and track shops that were previously issued with notices.
She said regular oversight will help improve consumer protection and strengthen cooperation between the municipality, shop owners, and community structures.
