The Alfred Nzo Regional Executive Committee (REC) of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) convened its first Ordinary Meeting on Sunday, 19 January 2025, at the ANC Regional Offices in Mount Ayliff. This landmark gathering focused on organizational strategies, sub-committee appointments, and addressing pressing socio-economic and political issues in the region.

The REC, elected in late November 2024, has been tasked with mobilizing youth support for the ANC and advancing youth interests. Recognizing the importance of clarity in roles and responsibilities, the REC resolved to liaise with the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) to facilitate induction through the newly launched ANCYL Parks Mankahlana Political School.

The region comprises four sub-regions, each with active task teams. To ensure operational efficiency, the REC committed to assisting these sub-regions in holding their Annual General Meetings (AGMs) by February 2025, working in collaboration with the ANCYL PEC.

The Alfred Nzo region boasts 18,000 members in good standing, including 6,000 new members. Of its 106 branches, 97 are in good standing, with nine requiring revitalization. The REC emphasized the need for induction programs for all branches and the establishment of Voting District (VD)-based leadership structures. Efforts will also focus on ensuring ANCYL presence in higher learning institutions, such as Ingwe FET College, through temporary task teams.

In line with constitutional provisions, the REC appointed its Regional Working Committee (RWC), tasked with executing REC decisions. Members of the RWC include Cde Mawethu Facu as Regional Chairperson, Cde Xolani Tantsi as Deputy Chairperson, Cde Lihle Chalo as Regional Secretary, Cde Onele Madjasi as Deputy Secretary, and Cde Angeziwe Myeki as Regional Treasurer. Other members include Cde Gcobisa Mbuli, Cde Zintle Tshezi, and Cde Songezo Spambo. The RWC was also directed to address the triple challenges facing the region’s youth: unemployment, poverty, and service delivery shortcomings.

To enhance operational efficiency, the REC established subcommittees with specific mandates, including Political Education, Membership Development, Media and Communication, Elections and Campaigns, Health, and Crime and GBV. These committees will help ensure that the ANCYL’s work remains focused and impactful.

The meeting reaffirmed the REC’s support for ANC Regional Task Team Convenor Cde Vukile Mhlelembana for Regional Chairperson and Cde Yanga Bonga for Regional Treasurer, emphasizing the inclusion of young leaders in ANC structures. The REC pledged to assist in addressing factionalism and other organizational challenges.

The REC resolved to prioritize back-to-school campaigns and preparations for upcoming by-elections in Matatiele. Reflecting the ANC’s 2025 theme, “The Year of Renewal,” the meeting ended on a high note, with members committed to strengthening the ANC and advancing the vision of the Freedom Charter.
