The African National Congress (ANC) has reaffirmed its commitment to transformation policies aimed at addressing historical inequalities and building a society rooted in democracy, social justice, and human rights. The party noted growing public debate around such policies, including concerns about unintended elitism, and stressed that discussions must be guided by scientific evidence.
Supporting the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) Commission’s call for focused evaluation studies, the ANC said these assessments will ensure Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) continues to achieve its intended goal of an equitable society. The 2023-2024 Analysis of Major B-BBEE Transactions report showed R7.2 billion was invested in enterprise development, enabling thousands of black-owned small businesses and cooperatives to grow. Supplier development commitments reached R40.7 billion, giving black suppliers broader access to value chains, while R64 billion was spent on training and upskilling black employees, particularly young people, women, and rural learners.
The ANC reiterated that B-BBEE benefits Africans, Coloureds, and Indians, as well as white women who were historically marginalised. These measures have opened opportunities in business ownership, corporate leadership, and skilled employment. The party urged all beneficiaries to defend these gains and reject political efforts to reverse progress, pointing to the Democratic Alliance’s stated intention to dismantle transformation policies.
Pledging to continue evaluating and strengthening such measures, the ANC said its goal remains to advance inclusive growth, deepen equity, and protect the victories of South Africa’s democratic struggle.
