The African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that senior leader Senzo Mchunu has agreed to step aside from organisational duties on 9 November 2025, Johannesburg. The announcement follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s establishment of the Commission of Inquiry and engagements with the ANC Integrity Commission.
What Happened
The ANC said Mchunu indicated his willingness to step aside in line with the party’s accountability and disciplinary values. He will continue serving in Cabinet duties under special leave from organisational work while the commission proceeds. The National Executive Committee (NEC) met to discuss the matter and agreed that Mchunu should temporarily withdraw from organisational roles.
Official Response
The party acknowledged Mchunu’s cooperation with the Madlanga Commission and the Integrity Commission. “As a movement rooted in renewal and ethical leadership, the ANC reiterates that once a member is criminally charged, they voluntarily step aside until the conclusion of such matters,” the statement said.
The NEC will continue monitoring developments and revisit the issue as needed.
Community Impact
The decision is expected to influence internal ANC processes and stability as the inquiry unfolds. Members and observers say the move reinforces the party’s stance on transparency and accountability, although it may affect organisational continuity.
