The African National Congress (ANC) in the Chris Hani Region has strongly condemned the assault of Babalwa Tshambu, allegedly by Ward 32 Councillor Sivuyele Plaatjie. The regional leadership expressed outrage at the incident, describing it as an act of violence that has no place in society.

In a statement issued on 19 August 2025, the ANC said it stands in full solidarity with Tshambu, wishing her a speedy recovery and assuring her of the organization’s support during this difficult time. The party reiterated its position that violence against women is unacceptable and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The ANC stressed that gender-based violence continues to be a devastating scourge in society, affecting individuals, families, and communities. It said the Chris Hani Region is committed to leading by example and ensuring that the party holds its members accountable.

As part of its response, the ANC confirmed that Councillor Sivuyele Plaatjie has been suspended with immediate effect pending disciplinary processes. The organization promised that proceedings would be thorough, fair, and transparent, with a commitment to ensuring that those responsible for such acts face consequences.

The party further called on its members to uphold values of respect, dignity, and protection, especially for women and children, and vowed to continue fighting to build a society free from fear and violence.
