The African National Congress celebrated the anniversary of the passing of President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela with a call for unity, renewal, and a return to the values he stood for. Mandela passed away on 5 December 2013. Twelve years later, the ANC says his legacy remains a guiding force for the movement and the country.
ANC Reflects on Mandela’s Leadership and Sacrifice
In its statement, the ANC said South Africans from all walks of life still honour Mandela’s contribution to freedom, dignity, and justice. The party recalled how the nation paused in grief when news of his passing broke. They described Mandela as a disciplined and humble leader who served the people with courage and clarity.
The ANC stressed his lifelong commitment to liberation, peace, and equality. It said his values continue to guide the movement as it prepares for the 5th National General Council on 8 December 2025.
ANC Condemns Attempts to Misuse Mandela’s Legacy
The statement criticised groups that “misuse Mandela’s name for narrow interests.” The ANC rejected what it called opportunistic attempts by “right-wing and counter-revolutionary forces.” The party said these groups distort Mandela’s stance and undermine South Africa’s sovereignty.
The ANC stressed Mandela’s belief in international solidarity. It said he supported progressive global partnerships. The party cited his reminder that “the enemies of the United States are not the enemies of the ANC.” They described this as a signal of independent foreign policy and resistance to manipulation.
Mandela Remembered as Statesman and Commander
The ANC paid tribute to Mandela’s leadership roles. He served as President of the ANC. He was Commander-in-Chief of Umkhonto we Sizwe. He became South Africa’s first democratically elected President.
The party praised his ability to unite the movement during turbulent periods. They said he helped build a non-racial, non-sexist, and democratic society.
The ANC added that Mandela’s leadership affirmed the Freedom Charter. They said his legacy strengthened the foundation of South Africa’s constitutional democracy.
ANC Calls for Renewal Ahead of National General Council
The ANC said the 5th NGC must renew the movement’s organisational discipline, credibility, and political clarity. The party called for stronger unity, deeper commitment to community needs, and determined efforts to fight corruption and factionalism.
Mandela’s values, the statement said, compel the movement to confront behaviour that weakens its bond with the people.
A Commitment to Mandela’s Vision
The ANC urged members to reflect on the principles that defined Mandela’s life. It said his example should push the organisation to reclaim its moral centre, revitalise its structures, and speed up social transformation in line with the Freedom Charter.
