ANC Backs NUM in Dismissing ‘Dumped ANC’ Claims
  • ANC Welcomes NUM’s Rebuttal Against Misreporting: The African National Congress appreciates the National Union of Mineworkers’ clear stance reaffirming their commitment to the Tripartite Alliance and rejecting any claims of disengagement made by the Sunday World article.
  • Strengthening the Historic Bonds of the Tripartite Alliance: The ANC commended NUM for defending the enduring partnership rooted in the liberation struggle and shared goals to serve the working class and promote the National Democratic Revolution.
  • NUM’s Respect for Democratic Rights aligns with ANC Vision: The ANC highlighted NUM’s respect for members’ democratic rights, which aligns with the party’s broader goal of building a society based on freedom, equality, and participation.

The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed the National Union of Mineworkers’ (NUM) firm rebuttal of a Sunday World article that claimed the union had “dumped” the ANC ahead of the 2026 municipal elections.

The ANC expressed appreciation for NUM’s clear reaffirmation of its commitment to the Tripartite Alliance and its rejection of any efforts to distort its position or undermine the unity of the Alliance. The ruling party commended the union for defending the historic bonds between the two organisations, which were built during the liberation struggle and remain rooted in a shared mission to serve the working class and advance the National Democratic Revolution.

The ANC acknowledged NUM’s respect for the democratic rights of its members, saying this aligned with the party’s vision of a society founded on freedom, equality, and full participation for all citizens. The party noted NUM’s legacy as a breeding ground for leaders who shaped democratic South Africa, including founding president James Motlatsi, President Cyril Ramaphosa, ANC Chairperson Gwede Mantashe, and former President Kgalema Motlanthe. These leaders, the ANC stated, emerged from NUM ranks to drive transformation that benefits mineworkers, their families, and working-class communities.

The ANC urged media houses to uphold the highest ethical standards, verify facts before publishing, and avoid misleading narratives that damage public trust. The party reaffirmed its determination to work with NUM and all Alliance partners to champion workers’ interests and secure a decisive victory in the 2026 municipal elections.
