The African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP) have recommitted to strengthening their alliance during a regional engagement session in the Alfred Nzo Region.
Background
The meeting comes just weeks after the ANC in the region concluded its fifth conference, where a resolution was taken to reinforce the long-standing partnership with the SACP. The alliance, rooted in a shared history of struggle against race, class, and gender oppression, continues to serve as a cornerstone of political strategy in the region.
Key Remarks from the Chairperson
Addressing the gathering, ANC Regional Chairperson Cde Tsileng Sobuthongo invoked Nelson Mandela’s 1995 remarks at the SACP congress, reaffirming the Communist Party’s role in defending and deepening South Africa’s democratic gains.
Sobuthongo emphasized that the alliance remains a “living mechanism”, flexible in changing times but unwavering in its commitment to justice and dignity. He acknowledged the ANC’s electoral setback in 2024 as a wake-up call, stressing the need for renewal and decisive action to regain public trust.
Citing Karl Marx’s writings, Sobuthongo noted that the region must avoid repeating past mistakes, instead focusing on innovation, clarity, and collective mobilization to defend the gains of freedom.
Alliance Priorities for Alfred Nzo
Sobuthongo underlined that the Alfred Nzo Region faces persistent poverty and underdevelopment, challenges that require both political organization and grassroots mobilization. He urged the alliance to recommit to its generational mission of moving the region away from poverty while ensuring that development reaches all sectors of society.
He confirmed that the ANC has already begun preparations for upcoming local government elections, with the Regional Executive Committee appointing an RET Coordinator and Regional Elections Manager to lead campaign structures.
