Amathole District Municipality hosted a Candlelight Ceremony at the Ncumisa Kondlo Town Hall. The programme formed part of the district’s ongoing HIV and AIDS awareness efforts. It brought together government departments, health partners and community members.
What Happened
The day began with a Services on Wheels outreach. It included the Eastern Cape AIDS Council, TB/HIV Care, AQUITY Innovations, the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority. These teams provided information, support and access to social and health services.
MMC Councillor Xhanti Mngxaso delivered the keynote address on behalf of Executive Mayor Councillor Anele Ntsangani. He encouraged residents to prioritise prevention and early testing. He also expressed support for families and individuals affected by HIV and AIDS.
Purpose of the Ceremony
The Candlelight Ceremony aimed to raise awareness, honour those lost and support those living with HIV and AIDS. Organisers said the event helps strengthen community involvement and reduces stigma. They noted that public participation remains essential in preventing new infections and promoting treatment adherence.
Community Impact
Residents welcomed the outreach. Many said access to on-site services made it easier to seek help. Health partners emphasized the importance of consistent awareness campaigns, especially in rural and semi-rural areas.
