The AmaMpondo Royal Family has confirmed it will announce the successor to the late King Zanozuko Sigcau at a press briefing scheduled for Saturday, 10 May 2025, at Hewu Great Place under the Ntlenzi Traditional Council in Flagstaff.
The briefing, led by the royal core (Isilili) of the Houses of King Marhelane, will begin at 11h00, with media accreditation and refreshments starting at 10h00. The event will be held under the leadership of Nkosi Zwelonke Sigcau.
According to the official media invite, the announcement follows a 2024 Constitutional Court ruling which affirmed that the late King Zanozuko Sigcau was the last recognised and gazetted King of the Mpondo Kingdom. The ruling confirmed that the succession must proceed in accordance with customary law, the Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Act, and the Court’s determination, all of which direct that the successor be from King Zanozuko’s lineage.
Hewu Great Place is regarded as one of the Mpondo Kingdom’s most historic royal residences, associated with King Marhelane kaSigcau and the broader legacy of the Sigcau family.
The successor to be named will become the fifth king from the Houses of Marhelane, following the reigns of Kings Mandlonke, Jongilizwe, Thandizulu, and Zanozuko, who passed away in 2022.
Media representatives and guests have been formally invited to attend the occasion, which marks a significant moment in the ongoing leadership of the AmaMpondo nation.
