south Africa’s U17 national team, the Amajimbos, sealed their place in the FIFA U17 World Cup knockout stage on 09 November 2025 despite a 3–1 defeat to Italy in their final Group A clash.
What Happened?
Coach Vela Khumalo made three changes to his starting line-up after the 1–1 draw with Qatar, recalling Sive Phama, Luke Hendricks, and Lebohang Dhlamini.
The Italians struck early when Samuele Inacio capitalized on a defensive lapse to fire home in the fourth minute. South Africa narrowly avoided a second setback thanks to a goal-line clearance by Tumi Mothapo.
Midway through the first half, Emile Witbooi sparked a quick attack from a free kick that saw Shaun Els convert the equalizer. Goalkeeper Lwandiso Radebe then kept the Amajimbos level with a crucial save before halftime.
However, Italy regained the lead after the breakthrough Antonio Arena’s header, and two minutes later, Inacio completed his brace, sealing a 3–1 victory. Despite the loss, the Amajimbos’ earlier results ensured a second-place finish in their group.
