Amahlathi Local Municipality hosted a vibrant agricultural showcase in Stutterheim, celebrating women who are shaping the region’s farming economy. The event emphasized achievements in livestock, crop production and craft-based enterprises. It also reinforced the municipality’s commitment to uplifting women through its Local Economic Development (LED) programme.
What Happened
The agricultural show brought together women farmers, crafters, and emerging agri-entrepreneurs from across Amahlathi. Exhibitors displayed livestock, fresh produce, handmade goods and value-added products. The gathering demonstrated the growing strength of women-led agri-businesses in rural and peri-urban communities.

The LED programme, supported by the Department of Agriculture, aims to provide training, resources and market access. Women are encouraged to grow their operations and expand beyond local markets.
Official Response
The event featured a strong message of empowerment led by well-known farmer Mam Nolist Ngcukana, who delivered an inspiring address.
“We want women to see the opportunities in farming. Growth and a sustainable livelihood are possible when you take action. Sitting and doing nothing will not change your circumstances. Live by the words Vuka uzenzele, wake up and do it for yourself,” Ngcukana told participants.
Municipal officials said collaboration and peer-to-peer learning remain essential pillars of the programme. They believe shared skills and innovation will strengthen the local agricultural economy.
Community Impact
The empowerment initiative is helping women build resilient enterprises in livestock, crop farming, home industries and handicrafts. Many now have greater access to training and emerging markets, giving them a stronger foothold in the local economy.
Amahlathi Local Municipality says it will continue supporting women at every stage of their agricultural journey. The goal is to place women at the forefront of food security, entrepreneurship and rural development.
