Their efforts were inspired by Sergeant Mvumbi of Bizana SAPS. While assisting community member Steve Nkonyeni with an affidavit in June, she learnt about his difficult living conditions. Paralysed since the age of 15, Nkonyeni was struggling without basic support. Sergeant Mvumbi took the extra step of connecting him with authorities and later rallied her colleagues to help.
Together, the officers donated a wheelchair, food parcels, furniture, and a water tank for Nkonyeni’s household. They also discovered that his older brother had mobility challenges and arranged a wheelchair for him too.
Local leaders praised the act of kindness. Ward Councillor Xolile Ntsethe thanked the women officers for their compassion, while also pointing out the ongoing challenges in delivering RDP houses to deserving families.
Representatives from the District Municipality, Correctional Services, and the Fire Department all expressed their appreciation for the initiative, stating the importance of unity and community care.
Bizana SAPS Station Commander Colonel Freemantle commended Sergeant Mvumbi for her compassion and urged all officers to embrace a culture of respect and solutions.
“Gone are the days of shifting blame—let us identify the problem and come up with the solution,” he said.
The project has not only brought relief to Nkonyeni and his family but also reminded the wider community of the vital role women in law enforcement play, both in service and in building hope.
