  • Introduction of Prepaid Water Meters: The Alfred Nzo District Municipality is implementing prepaid water meters in Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality to better manage water loss and leakage issues.
  • Benefits for Residents: Prepaid meters provide residents with greater control over water usage, help address outstanding debts, and promote responsible consumption through a transparent billing process.
  • Phased Rollout of New Meters: The project begins in commercial areas before expanding to residential households, replacing old meters with new prepaid systems to improve water management and reduce non-revenue water.
  • Broader Water Challenges Addressed: The municipality is also tackling water supply issues at local hospitals and across the municipality, along with remedial work on the Ntshamathe River sewer spillage.

The Alfred Nzo District Municipality (ANDM) has announced the introduction of prepaid water meters in the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to combat severe water losses and leakages affecting the area.

The project involves replacing old and outdated meters with new prepaid systems. The rollout will begin in the central business district and commercial areas before expanding in phases to domestic households. By upgrading infrastructure, the municipality aims to strengthen water management and reduce non-revenue water.

For residents, the prepaid meters will bring direct benefits. Consumers will now have greater control over their water usage, helping to curb historical water debts. Unlike the previous system, which allowed water to be credited, the new approach ensures that households only consume what they have paid for. This is expected to promote responsible usage and establish a more transparent billing system.

The municipality also discussed broader water challenges, including supply issues at the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Regional Hospital and across the local municipality. ANDM provided an update on the Ntshamathe River sewer spillage, where extensive remedial work has already been undertaken. Ratepayers expressed frustration and urged the municipality to keep communities updated as these challenges are addressed.
