Alfred Nzo District Launches Major Water Projects Across Three Municipalities

The Alfred Nzo District Municipality (ANDM) has officially launched a series of critical bulk water supply projects aimed at improving access to clean water and creating local economic opportunities across the district.

The initiative, led by Executive Mayor Cllr. Vukile Mhlelembana and supported by Members of the Mayoral Committee, included contractor handovers for three major water schemes:

  • Ntabankulu Water Supply Scheme (Wards 17 & 18)
  • Greater Mbizana Ward 21 Water Supply Scheme
  • Maluti–Ramohlakoana Bulk Water Supply – Phase 2

The outreach programme took place on Thursday, 8 May 2025, across multiple sites including the Ntabankulu Local Municipality, Matatiele Local Municipality, and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality (WMMLM).

Scope of Work and Economic Impact

The infrastructure development will involve activities such as:

  • Clearing and grubbing of project sites
  • Construction of reticulation systems and communal tap connections
  • Excavation and trenching for pipeline installation
  • Installation of isolation valves, air valves, pressure tanks, and standpipes

The district says the initiative is not only designed to deliver safe, reliable water supply, but also to stimulate job creation and upskill local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) involved in the construction and civil works.

“These water projects are essential not only for improving the livelihoods of our communities, but for developing the capacity of local businesses and creating lasting employment,” said Cllr. Mhlelembana.

Media Participation

Members of the media were invited to attend and report on the handovers, underscoring the transparency and community engagement objectives of the municipality.

The Alfred Nzo District Municipality continues to prioritise basic service delivery and infrastructure expansion in some of the most underserved areas of the Eastern Cape.
