The Alfred Nzo District Municipality (ANDM) has officially handed over a water infrastructure development project worth over R52 million to improve clean water access for Ward 21 residents in the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality.
The announcement was made during a handover ceremony led by Executive Mayor Cllr. Vukile Mhlelembana, alongside Cllr. Diya and Cllr. Mavundla from WMMLM. The Mayor introduced Gilgal Consulting Engineers & Project Managers as the appointed project engineers and Cycle Civils & Projects as the main contractor responsible for implementing the water supply scheme.
The project includes the installation of 86km of reticulation pipelines (ranging from 50mm to 355mm in diameter), 54 isolation valves and chambers, 57 air valves, 504 standpipes, and 18 break pressure tanks. Construction is expected to begin in May 2025 and be completed by April 2026, with a total budget of R52,413,164.22.
The initiative is projected to create over 40 local job opportunities and will benefit 1,840 households. Local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are encouraged to participate through subcontracting under the main contractor, subject to proper bidding procedures.
Mayor Mhlelembana urged residents to support the Project Steering Committee (PSC) and to report any disruptions or challenges during the construction process. He also warned against illegal water connections, which often reduce pressure and limit access to properly connected homes.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Ntutuko Nyakatha expressed heartfelt gratitude. “This project marks an important milestone in improving our lives as the community. We will have access to clean water after a very long time sharing water with animals. We are so grateful for the work that the municipality is doing to better our lives as people in rural areas.”
This water supply scheme forms part of Alfred Nzo District Municipality’s broader commitment to rural infrastructure development and basic service delivery across the region.
