The Alfred Nzo District Municipality, in partnership with the Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality, hosted a Mayoral Imbizo on the 25 September 2025 in Ward 5, Mthamvuna Village. The gathering brought government services to one of the district’s most rural border communities, straddling KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
WHAT HAPPENED
District Executive Mayor Vukile Mhlelembana led the initiative, where sector departments deployed mobile units to provide on-the-spot services and information to residents.
In his address, Mayor Mhlelembana delivered a progress report on service delivery in the area, stressing the need for community involvement in development projects.
“Government can only succeed when communities take an active role in shaping their own future,” said Mayor Mhlelembana.
He also mentioned the importance of working closely with traditional leaders to preserve cultural values while strengthening governance.
OFFICIAL RESPONSE
Mayor Daniswa Mafumbatha of the Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality praised the Alfred Nzo District for ensuring government presence is felt even in the most remote areas.
“This commitment shows that no community is too far for government to reach,” Mafumbatha noted.
The municipalities reaffirmed their pledge to continue engaging citizens through regular izimbizo across the province.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
For residents of Mthamvuna Village, the imbizo offered a rare chance to directly interact with municipal officials and access basic services without traveling long distances.
