Alfred Nzo District Municipality has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening agricultural development in Ward 28 of the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality, recognising the area’s vital contribution to food security and rural economic development.

Led by Cllr Banele Qwayede, Chairperson of the Planning and Economic Development Portfolio Committee, the municipality’s delegation recently visited Isigidi Development (PTY) LTD, a fast-growing agricultural enterprise that has become a key player in the region.

A Growing Rural Success Story

Isigidi Development specialises in amadumbe, sweet potatoes, medicinal cannabis, hemp, and a variety of vegetables. The enterprise supports a network of smallholder farmers by providing market access, aggregation services, and technical guidance.

For the past three years, the business has benefited from the Alfred Nzo Agri-Parks Programme, which promotes rural economic growth through agriculture. Its amadumbe produce is now sold in major fresh produce markets in Durban and Johannesburg, where demand outstrips supply when Ward 28 is not in production.

“We are encouraged by the growth of Sigidi Development and the dedication of the smallholder farmers in Ward 28. These farmers play a critical role in ensuring food security, not only in the district but nationally,” said Cllr Qwayede.

Challenges Facing Farmers

Despite their progress, farmers highlighted challenges, particularly the lack of mechanisation. Many still rely on traditional methods, limiting productivity and yields. Farmers called for urgent support in the form of tractors and modern farming implements.

The Alfred Nzo delegation responded by calling on government departments in the economic development cluster, especially the Department of Agriculture, to provide mechanisation support, including at least one tractor for community use.

“Our farmers cannot reach full commercial potential without the right tools. It’s time for government to rally behind these producers,” said one local farmer.

Next Steps and Commitments

The visit also underscored the urgent need for a central aggregation and distribution hub to streamline produce collection and boost access to markets.

The Alfred Nzo District Municipality committed to:

  • Supporting the establishment of a centralised collection and trading hub,
  • Providing input support to smallholder farmers,
  • Facilitating further commercialisation of rural produce under the AFF and Agri-Parks strategies.

The municipality emphasised that inclusive rural development will be advanced through intergovernmental collaboration, guided by the District Development Model (DDM).

Looking Ahead

Alfred Nzo District Municipality pledged to continue engaging stakeholders to ensure Ward 28 farmers and enterprises like Isigidi Development receive recognition and support as they strengthen the region’s agricultural economy.
