The Alfred Nzo District Municipality (ANDM), in partnership with the Agricultural Sector Education and Training Authority (AgriSETA), has launched a Potato Production Skills Development Programme that will train 500 small-scale farmers across the district. The initiative is designed to commercialise emerging farming and strengthen local food security, with 100 top-performing farmers set to receive mechanisation support and direct market linkages.

Background

Agriculture remains one of the key drivers of rural development in Alfred Nzo. However, many small-scale farmers lack access to technical training, modern tools, and sustainable markets. This programme addresses those gaps by providing short skills training in potato farming practices and agricultural mechanisation.

Key Features of the Programme

  • 500 farmers will undergo accredited training in potato production.
  • Top 100 achievers will receive mechanised production support.
  • Selected farmers will be linked directly to buyers and formal markets.
  • Training will be delivered by an accredited provider recommended by AgriSETA, ideally a Potatoes South Africa member.

Role of Alfred Nzo District Municipality

The municipality will play a central role in the programme through:

  • Recruitment of trainees from Matatiele, Umzimvubu, Mbizana, and Ntabankulu
  • Overall project coordination and management
  • Monitoring and evaluation alongside partners
  • Community mobilisation and stakeholder engagement

This model places local government at the centre of development while leveraging national expertise and industry support.

Wider Impact

The initiative aligns with the District Development Model (DDM) and complements the Alfred Nzo Agri-Parks initiative, which aims to scale up agricultural production, reduce unemployment, and grow the district economy. Potatoes were identified as a high-demand crop with strong market potential and favourable growing conditions in the region.

Impact Summary

  • 500 small-scale farmers to benefit from skills training
  • 100 top achievers to access mechanisation and market opportunities
  • Strengthens food security and job creation in Alfred Nzo
  • Supports District Development Model and Agri-Parks strategy
  • Promotes commercialisation of small-scale farming
