Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen has taken decisive steps to address serious governance concerns surrounding the recent election of the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).
Concerns have been raised about inconsistencies in voter communication, unclear candidate eligibility, and the fairness of the selection and verification process. These issues have cast doubt over the transparency and legitimacy of the SAVC election, prompting the Minister to act under his legal oversight responsibilities.
According to Minister Steenhuisen, credible complaints indicate that some eligible veterinary professionals may have been excluded due to conflicting information about voting deadlines. Stakeholders have also questioned whether the election process met the requirements outlined in Regulation 5 of the SAVC Election Regulations, including the Registrar’s role in vetting candidates and nominations.
In response, the Minister has requested a full departmental report and legal opinion on the process, briefed Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Agriculture for oversight, called on the Director-General to prepare for a possible re-run of the election if legal advice fails to confirm its validity. He also stated that an investigation into the Registrar’s conduct may be necessary and raised the possibility that any related costs be recovered from the responsible officeholder.
“Good governance is not optional; it is foundational,” said Steenhuisen. “Public trust in statutory bodies like the SAVC depends on credible and fair procedures.”
