Amathole District Municipality (ADM) has assessed its readiness for the 2025 Summer Customary Initiation Season during a District Initiation Forum meeting held at the ADM Head Office in East London. On 28 October 2025, local initiation forum representatives presented reports outlining progress and challenges as preparations intensify at East London.

What Happened?

The District Initiation Forum gathered to review safety plans, compliance checks, and support systems for initiation schools across Amathole. These reports will form a consolidated District Report that will be tabled at the Provincial Initiation Forum from 4–5 November 2025.

District Initiation Forum Chairperson Chief Mzikayise Kaulela called for stronger cooperation between municipalities, government departments, and traditional leaders.

“This season will be challenging, but with collaboration we can ensure our boys have a safe passage — Baye Bephila, Babuye Bephila,” he said.

A follow-up meeting with municipal Speakers will explore urgent solutions to bridge the resource shortage and secure essential services for initiation sites.

Community Impact

Residents have been urged to remain confident in safety efforts, as the district works to maintain its zero-death record achieved during the 2025 Winter Season. Forum representatives were encouraged to continue groundwork in their areas to protect initiates’ health, dignity, and cultural rights.

The long-term goal focuses on improving community welfare through aligned government-traditional leadership initiatives.
