  • Reinstatement of E-hailing Operators at Maponya Mall: ActionSA welcomed the decision to allow e-hailing operators back at Maponya Mall, acknowledging the community’s support and the importance of the transport sector.
  • Ongoing Harassment of E-hailing Drivers: The party highlighted that harassment from taxi operators is not limited to Maponya Mall and urged government action to ensure safety and uphold the rule of law in the transport industry.
  • Concerns Over Lawlessness and Violence: ActionSA expressed concern about continued lawlessness and violence, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to protect communities from intimidation and ensure safety.

ActionSA has welcomed the decision to allow e-hailing operators back at Maponya Mall in Soweto, following the death of an e-hailing driver last week. The party says the move recognises the vital role of active citizenry, as residents rallied in support of the drivers.

ActionSA Member of the Gauteng Legislature, Emma More, said this is not the first time e-hailing drivers have faced harassment from taxi operators at the mall, and warned that Maponya is not the only hotspot where such intimidation occurs. She stressed the need for government to take proactive steps to ensure the rule of law prevails in the transport sector, which plays a central role in Gauteng’s economy.

The party expressed concern at government’s ongoing failure to deal with lawlessness, which leaves communities vulnerable to violence and intimidation. More stressed ActionSA’s stance that the safety of residents must always come first, and that violence by taxi operators or any other group must never be tolerated.

ActionSA called on the Department of Transport, Gauteng Traffic Police, Metro Police and SAPS to enforce taxi routes and licensing regulations strictly, and to arrest those operating unlawfully.

The statement warned against a government that only reacts after protests or loss of life, insisting that decisive action must be taken before situations escalate. ActionSA reaffirmed its commitment to building a safe, law-abiding and economically strong Gauteng.
