A thirty-nine year old man was arrested for possession of abalone (perlemoen) after his car crashed into pavement at Kabega Park, Gqeberha while he was running away from police.

On Monday 19th September in morning, Thornhill police received a tip off about a suspicious Renault Kwid and went after it.  The alleged suspect was being chased by police from Jeffreys Bay to Gqeberha where his car ended up crashing into a pavement, he tried to flee however, police arrested him.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said, “About 20 minutes after we received the tip-off we spotted the vehicle on R102 towards Jeffreys Bay. When we turned around our vehicle the Renault Kwid driver started to increase the speed and that resulted in a chase which ensued along R102, N2 and Old Cape Road.”

Beetge added, the chase ended in Kabega Park when the Kwid driver lost control of the vehicle due to wet conditions and embanked on a pavement.

Captain Beetge concluded, “When searching the vehicle of the suspect, we discovered 2,372 units of abalone that were in large black bags. The estimated street value of the confiscated abalone is about R250,000.
