11 families were left homeless in ward 6, Zwelitsha village under the Matatiele Local Municipality, following an unexpected strong wind that swept their roofs off over the weekend. Reports say seven homes are completely damaged and the other four are partially damaged. There are no reported casualties.

“The Alfred Nzo District Municipality visited the homes of the victims after the incident to assess the damage that has been caused and to assist where possible. The families were each given a sponge and a blanket,” said

Lixolile Petela the ANDM’s communications head.

The affected families are displaced with some seeking refuge in neighbours and relatives.

“We have never experienced anything of this nature in our village, residents are still in shock. This tornado unexpectedly swept these homes on Friday evening. We have seen government officials coming in to help. ANDM Disaster brought sponges and blankets for the families, I also heard that SASSA employees visited the victims as well,” said Sikhumbuzo Vikwa ward 6 cllr.
