NPO works to curb gender based violence and rape in Lusikisiki

Date:

Litha Mvunelo started an nonprofit organisation named Improved Gender Acts and Discrimination of Children Initiative in March 2022. He works closely with Bukeka Jeqe, Aphiwe Nongawuza and Mandlakazi Ndima and other stakeholders.

The NPO is based in Lusikisiki, it was established after Mvunelo realized that there was an emerging crisis in his hometown. The NPO’s objective is to fight the soaring gender-based violence and rape crisis, this occurred after the town took first place in police statistics nationally earlier this year.

“We are already working on conducting environmental scanning through hosting separate dialogues of women, children and men. This is meant to help us establish what is the root cause of such horrendous behaviors among our people and derive solutions.” said Mvunelo

He said that most of the issues that contribute to the rising numbers of gender based violence and other related matters are caused by socio-economic matters such as unemployment, poverty and illiteracy.

“NPO aims to change the livelihood of children as they are the future, through creating activities to keep them busy and away from the street. The aims to introduce activities such as debate and different sports codes.” he said

IGADCI has started working with Canham Junior Secondary School, Sichwe Junior Secondary School, Hillbrow Senior Secondary School and Lusikisiki Junior Secondary School. Mvunelo says that this iniative will help keep children away from drug-related substance abuse as well as improving their lives.

The NPO aims to eradicate bullism in schools as it had made headlines in the previous months of children commiting suicide after being bullied countrywide.

He added that he works closely with traditional leaders from different communities to aid in finding solutions to curb the crisis of society members.

“The goal is to rehabilitate the minds of women, men and children. To challenge stereotype influences such as culture which men often assume that they have a rights over women and children. he said

The NPO aims to restore morals, respect for human rights in communities in Lusikisiki, said Mvunelo.
