Transnet has donated more than 4,000 pairs of school shoes to learners in disadvantaged communities across South Africa as part of its Shoes on Feet campaign.
The initiative, led by Transnet Group Chief Executive Michelle Phillips, mobilised employees and corporate partners to contribute footwear for learners who cannot afford school shoes. A recent handover took place in Gompo Village, East London, in the Eastern Cape.
What happened
Transnet SOC Ltd launched the Shoes on Feet campaign to support learners from disadvantaged backgrounds by providing school shoes.
The campaign has already distributed more than 4,000 pairs of school shoes nationwide since February 2026.
On Wednesday, 11 March 2026, the programme reached the Eastern Cape when 250 pairs of school shoes were handed over at Inyathi Primary School in Gompo Village, East London.
The event included learners, educators and Transnet representatives. According to Transnet, the initiative aims to help learners attend school with dignity and without disruption caused by lack of basic school items.
Why it matters
Many learners in low-income communities struggle to afford essential school items such as shoes.
Transnet said the campaign is designed to:
- Support school attendance
- Improve learners’ confidence and dignity
- Create a better learning environment
The programme also reflects broader corporate social responsibility efforts aimed at addressing social challenges in communities across South Africa.
During the handover event, Transnet leadership emphasised that education remains a key pathway to improving opportunities for young people.
