The Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA) will host an inclusive stakeholder engagement focused on disability participation in the social housing sector in Gqeberha on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

The dialogue forms part of SHRA’s programme to improve participation of persons with disabilities across the human settlements value chain. The engagement involves national, provincial and municipal human settlements authorities.

What happened

The Social Housing Regulatory Authority announced a stakeholder engagement session aimed at advancing inclusion of persons with disabilities in South Africa’s social housing sector.

The event will take place in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, and is being organised with the National Department of Human Settlements, the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

According to the media advisory, the session will bring together government stakeholders, disability organisations, sector institutions and industry partners.

Discussions will focus on opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate across the social housing value chain.

These include:

  • Housing development
  • Construction
  • Professional services
  • Governance
  • Sector investment

The engagement will also address regulatory, funding and accessibility barriers affecting inclusive housing delivery.

Official response

In its media advisory, SHRA said the engagement forms part of its commitment to transformation and inclusive participation in the social housing sector.

The platform is expected to encourage dialogue between government and disability sector organisations while identifying ways to increase participation opportunities.

The process is guided by the principle “Nothing for us, without us,” emphasising direct involvement of persons with disabilities in shaping housing sector decisions.

Community impact

The engagement could influence how inclusive housing policies and opportunities are implemented in the Eastern Cape and nationally.

Stakeholders will explore ways to expand participation of persons with disabilities in housing development projects and related services.

The discussions may also highlight barriers that affect access to social housing programmes and sector participation.

What happens next

The stakeholder engagement is scheduled for Wednesday, 11 March 2026 in Gqeberha.

Members of the media have been invited to attend and cover the discussions.

Further outcomes or policy updates may be announced following the dialogue between government and sector stakeholders.
