Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth announced on 3 February 2026 that South Africa’s National Minimum Wage (NMW) will increase from R28.79 to R30.23 per hour.
The new rate becomes legally binding from 1 March 2026. This applies to each ordinary hour worked.
The R1.44 increase applies to most workers, including farm workers and domestic workers.

For employers, the announcement sets a legal floor for wages, which cannot be reduced or avoided through contracts or agreements.
Importantly, paying below the NMW remains unlawful and enforceable through inspections and dispute processes.
