Born and raised in Chebe Village, Centane, Lusanda Dumke rose to prominence as captain of the Springbok Women’s rugby team. She led within the Border Rugby structures and was widely respected as a champion for women in sport.
Beyond her sporting achievements, Dumke was a committed community builder. She founded the Lusanda Dumke Foundation, which focused on empowering young people through sport, education, and social development.
Funeral attended by national and provincial leaders
The Special Provincial Funeral was attended by government representatives, the sporting community, and local residents.
Deputy Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe, delivered the eulogy on behalf of Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane. The Premier described Dumke as:
“A courageous leader whose success was always matched by a deep sense of responsibility to uplift others.”
As a mark of respect, the Provincial Flag was flown at half-mast.
