CRIME: SOUTH AFRICA IS BLEEDING

A day in South Africa is not guaranteed that you’d end it alive due to the level of crime increasing day-in day-out. The drastic increase in killings, robberies, sexual violence and mass shootings seem to be never ending in South Africa.

It is no secret that South Africa has become one of the highest ranked country in crime statistics in the world. South Africa’s crime rate has increased horrendously in the past few months of 2022.

We no longer have peaceful weekends nor week days in South Africa due to crime. Same attacks, incidents and violent crimes take place each day, but all in different locations. These mass shootings across the country have always been there, but recently it has gotten out of hand.

In less than a month there has been over three mass shootings that made headlines within one weekend. All these shootings took place in different locations that are far from each other.

Sixteen patrons shot in Mdlalose Tavern in Soweto, four also died after a shooting in a tavern located in Pietermaritzburg and lastly two citizens who also died in a shooting in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni.

How does the future of South Africa look like from here? Are citizens of South Africa no longer safe within their communities?

At this point and time, it is safe to say no one is safe in South Africa. If people are comfortable enough to randomly open fire at innocent citizens, the worst is yet to come.

According to MoneyWeb (6 June 2022), “Figures for the first quarter of 2022 showed a shocking increase in violent crimes like murders, sexual violence and assaults. Murder increase 22% to 6 083 for the quarter, working out to an average of 67 murders per day”.

These statistics have shown more than enough. This is a cry for help to the government, police department and The National Intelligence Agency (NIA). Strict and lasting measures to combat crime in South Africa need to be put in place in each and every neighborhood across the country.

The safety of South Africans is nothing near secured. South Africa is bleeding and it is all at the cost of innocent lives.
