The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) joined the Komani community to commemorate the Day of Reconciliation on 16 December. The event was held at the Thobi Khula Indoor Sports Centre in the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality.
What Happened
The programme began with a Reconciliation Walk for Peace, which symbolised unity, healing, and togetherness. Community members, government officials, and stakeholders took part in the walk.
The commemoration aimed to promote social cohesion and reflect on South Africa’s shared history.
Message of Unity
Speaking on behalf of the Eastern Cape Premier, MPL MEC Zolile Williams stressed the importance of the day. He said 16 December reminds South Africans of the need for unity, forgiveness, and healing.
Williams noted that the Day of Reconciliation calls on citizens to confront historical injustices. He encouraged communities to embrace the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and work towards a non-racial and inclusive society.
Services on Wheels
COGTA also brought government services closer to the people through its Services on Wheels programme. Officials provided information and guidance on key issues affecting communities.
These included anti-corruption, customary male initiation, rights and responsibilities, and the Customary Initiation Act. The services aimed to improve access to information and strengthen public awareness.
Why It Matters
COGTA said such initiatives help build trust between government and communities. They also support education, accountability, and active citizen participation.
