The Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality (WMMLM) has hosted a community programme aimed at fighting Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). The initiative focused on empowering women and protecting children from abuse.
What Happened
The programme took place over two days, from 08 to 09 December 2025. It focused on educating women and children about GBVF and its impact on families and communities.
Municipal officials said GBVF remains a serious concern. Women and children continue to face abuse, often from people they trust.
Community Engagement
Councillor L. Makholosa called on ward councillors to strengthen local GBVF forums. She said ward-based forums can help victims report abuse early and receive support.
Makholosa stressed that community structures must respond quickly. She said silence often protects perpetrators and leaves victims vulnerable.
Empowerment and Awareness
The session was facilitated by Adv. O. Nodangala, Manager of Legal Services at WMMLM. Local organisations also supported the programme.
Discussions focused on community responsibility and child protection. Strong emphasis was placed on safeguarding children within families and neighbourhoods.
Speakers urged mothers to protect their children at all times. They warned against placing children at risk in the name of love or trust.
Why It Matters
Municipal leaders said awareness programmes remain critical. Education helps communities understand their role in preventing abuse.
The municipality committed to ongoing GBVF interventions. Officials said collaboration remains key in building safer communities.
