
The University of Fort Hare’s Faculty of Management and Commerce hosted its 3rd Extended Curriculum Program (ECP) Indaba at Mpekweni Beach Resort. The two-day event brought together academics, administrators, and student leaders to discuss the future of ECPs in South Africa.
Participants from UFH, CPUT, NMU, UWC, UniVen, and WSU explored how ECPs improve access, support student success, and respond to national higher education challenges.
What Happened?
UFH Deans Prof Richard Shambare, Prof Linda Sibali, and Prof Tsediso Makoelle led the discussions. Representatives from Teaching and Learning, Quality Assurance, and student leadership also participated.
The program included keynote addresses, panel engagements, paper presentations, and a showcase of ECP initiatives.
Discussions focused on the identity, purpose, and institutional role of ECPs within the higher education sector.
A major moment was the Gala Appreciation Awards Ceremony, which honoured staff and partners for advancing ECP work in the Faculty of Management and Commerce. Awards recognized excellence in research, long-standing support, and dedicated service.

Dr Vusumzi Funda said the Indaba aimed to strengthen national dialogue on the purpose and positioning of ECPs, while creating a platform to share best practices and emerging trends.
In her closing, Associate Professor Roxanne Piderit praised the Indaba for deepening collaboration across universities and setting the foundation for the 4th ECP Indaba.
