President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africa to hold Men’s Indabas and structured dialogues with men and boys throughout the year, not only during the 16 Days of Activism campaign. He delivered these remarks at the Free State Provincial Men’s Indaba at Lemo Green Park in Bloemfontein.
President Calls for Men to Lead Change
President Ramaphosa said the country needs men who respect women and value compassion, accountability, and strong character. “South Africa needs men who are protectors of women, not perpetrators,” he said.
He stressed that violence against women and children can only be reduced when men take responsibility for their behaviour and actively work to change harmful attitudes.
The President added that Men’s Indabas must become regular platforms for honest reflection, healing, and behavioural change.
Indaba Brings Thousands Together to Address Social Challenges
The event brought together more than 4,500 participants from across the Free State. Attendees included representatives from government, political parties, faith-based organisations, the sports community, civil society groups, and young men from various districts.
Speakers engaged on issues affecting men, including mental health, substance abuse, fatherhood, and gender roles. The gathering aimed to build stronger, safer communities by encouraging positive masculinity and responsible leadership.
Dialogue to Continue Across Provinces
Government officials confirmed that similar engagements will be rolled out across the country. They said ongoing dialogues with men are essential for reducing Gender-Based Violence and Femicide and for strengthening community wellbeing.
