A joint law-enforcement team arrested a suspect after a shootout in Verulam on 4 December 2025. The operation recovered a stolen Toyota Cross, several high-caliber weapons, and rifle magazines. One security officer suffered injuries during the incident.
What Happened
Tracking teams traced a vehicle stolen in Durban North to the Riet River area. The signal moved through Umlazi and into Verulam, prompting security partners to deploy extra units.
When officers closed in, the suspects jumped from the stolen car and opened fire on two security vehicles. A security officer from a private company sustained a gunshot wound. KZN VIP Ambulance crews reached the scene within minutes and stabilised him before transport to a nearby hospital.
The suspects ran into dense bushland near Siphesihle School in Old Phase, Trenance Park. One suspect was caught shortly after. The stolen white Toyota Cross was also recovered.
Official Response
A law-enforcement spokesperson praised the coordinated action.
“Rapid teamwork helped us contain a dangerous situation and recover heavy weapons,” the spokesperson said.
Officials confirmed the search for remaining suspects continues.
Community Impact
Residents near Siphesihle School reported concern as gunfire echoed through the area. Parents expressed relief after police confirmed the school remained safe.
The recovery of high-caliber weapons raised alarms, however community leaders commended the swift response that prevented further harm.
