Suspects open fire during high-speed chase near Ntafufu
A dramatic shootout unfolded on 24 November 2025, along the R61 near Ntafufu Location outside Lusikisiki. Members of the SAPS Operation Command Centre (OCC) were acting on information about a suspicious green VW Polo with no rear number plate, believed to be linked to drug activity.
The vehicle was spotted heading towards Port St John’s. Police attempted to stop it, but the driver sped off, ignoring commands. A chase followed through the winding route.
Officer shot, suspects killed in gun battle
When officers tried to overtake and block the fleeing Polo, its occupants opened fire. Police returned fire, killing both suspects. One officer was shot in the chest but was saved by a bullet-resistant vest, escaping without injury. The police vehicle was hit multiple times.
Firearm, drugs seized at the scene
At the scene, police recovered:
- A 9mm pistol with a jammed cartridge
- A stash of illegal drugs
- The bullet-riddled green VW Polo

Multiple cases opened, IPID to investigate
The following cases have been opened:
- Two inquest dockets
- Attempted murder
- Possession of illegal firearm and ammunition
- Malicious damage to property
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has taken over the investigation.
