Mayors from the Alfred Nzo District joined national and provincial leaders today at a high-level investment engagement held at Dan’s Lodge in the Nyandeni Local Municipality. The session forms part of the Eastern Seaboard Development (ESD) initiative, which aims to unlock economic growth across the KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape corridor.
What Happened
The summit focused on profiling investment opportunities that can strengthen regional development. Delegates stressed the role of the Eastern Seaboard Development initiative under the District Development Model, which seeks to promote spatial integration and drive inclusive rural development.
Showcasing sessions featured Dans Country Lodge, Lurasinis Country Lodge, and projects within Nyandeni Local Municipality. Leaders from government, traditional authorities, the private sector, and development partners explored ways to boost job creation and stimulate the rural economy.
Official Response
KZN COGTA MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi opened the summit and welcomed delegates. He stressed the need for collaboration to advance regional investment.
Deputy Minister of COGTA Dr. Namane Masemola presented the Eastern Seaboard context and outlined the programme’s long-term vision.
King Thabo Seatlholo, Chairperson of the National House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders, voiced strong support for the District Development Model. “The DDM must remain a catalyst for real rural development,” he said.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane detailed ongoing provincial commitments. He outlined major infrastructure projects, including the upgrades at Mthatha Airport, and the construction of the Msikaba and Mtentu Bridges.
SALGA President Councillor Bheki Stofile explained how local government planning strengthens regional growth along the Eastern Seaboard.
Delivering the keynote address, COGTA Minister Velenkosi Hlabisa emphasised strengthening local government. He called for “inclusive project development that attracts investors and expands local businesses across communities.”
Community Impact
The summit’s focus on targeted investments aims to bring long-term economic activity to rural districts along the Eastern Seaboard. Leaders say the initiative will position local municipalities to benefit from tourism, infrastructure expansion, and private-sector partnerships.
