A new rural bridge has officially been handed over in Tebe-Tebe, eMaXesibeni, bringing long-awaited relief to villagers who once risked their lives to cross the Umzimvubu River. The structure was delivered through the Welisizwe Rural Bridge Programme, with DA Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, attending the ceremony.
What Happened
The bridge replaces a dangerous, collapsing structure that cut off residents of Welakabini and Esihlahleni from basic services. The DA says it had written to the President and pushed relentlessly for intervention after exposing the unsafe crossing.
Now, for the first time in years, locals have safe, year-round access to schools, clinics, and emergency services. Minister Macpherson called it a major victory for a forgotten community and a sign that government can deliver where it’s needed most.
In addition, the Department of Public Works aims to build 96 rural bridges annually through the Welisizwe Programme.
What People Are Saying
The announcement sparked strong reactions on Facebook. While many praised the outcome, others raised questions about credit and accountability.
- “Congratulations, what an incredible benefit to these communities. Well done DA!” – Liz Cook
- “Well done. You have won the hearts of the community.” – Noel van Breda
- “Thank you, Democratic [Alliance], for treating the people with civility and taking action to improve lives.” – Ellen Branquinho
Some users also criticised other political parties for failing to act sooner, while others called for road upgrades in rural Eastern Cape. A few expressed concerns over costs, asking for transparency.
Nonetheless, the majority of comments recognised the bridge as a genuine improvement for local residents.
Why It Matters
For villagers living along the Umzimvubu River, the new bridge brings:
- Safe travel for schoolchildren and pensioners
- Reliable access to hospitals and public transport
- Faster emergency response
- Year-round connectivity during floods
This handover signals progress in restoring infrastructure in deeply rural parts of the Eastern Cape, where basic access remains a daily challenge.
