Higher education crackdown hits Ladysmith this week, as authorities move to close a bogus PhD college operating without approval.
What Happened
Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Mimmy Gondwe, will lead a joint intergovernmental raid on a college in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday, 20 November 2025. The institution allegedly offers unaccredited qualifications — including PhDs — without proper registration.
This marks the fourth awareness campaign of its kind by Dr Gondwe this academic year, targeting illegal institutions in provinces with large student numbers.
Official Response
The campaign includes Alfred Duma Local Municipality, SAPS, SAQA, CHE, Home Affairs, and the Department of Employment and Labour. Officials say the targeted institution has repeatedly ignored calls to comply with education laws.
“Ongoing awareness campaigns help students and parents avoid falling victim to bogus colleges,” said Deputy Minister Gondwe.

The crackdown aims to protect students from scams that cost them time, money, and future job prospects. It also highlights the risks of fake academic credentials, especially at postgraduate level.
