The family of Hlobokazi Vusiwe (27) is demanding justice after she was found murdered near a grave site in Lusikisiki. They say the police failed to use crucial evidence that could help identify her killer.
Vusiwe, from Mbadango in Flagstaff, left home on Saturday to return to work in Magwambu, Lusikisiki. She never returned. By late afternoon, her relatives grew worried and community members shared missing-person messages across WhatsApp and Facebook.
Evidence found at the scene
On 2 November, police discovered her body in New Town at around 15:40, next to the graveyard bushes. According to an internal police message that circulated in the area, officers found bruises on her arms and signs of strangulation. They also found used condoms beside her body.
In addition, investigators noted human tissue under her nails, which suggests she fought back before she died. Her family believes this evidence can lead to an arrest.
However, weeks later, no one has been taken into custody.
Family: “The system failed her”
In an email sent to Pondoland Times, the family expressed deep pain and frustration.
“DNA can be taken from the condoms. Human flesh was in her nails. This case can be solved, but nothing is being done.”
They say Vusiwe’s case highlights a pattern of gender-based violence cases going cold in the Eastern Cape.
“How many women must die before police officials do their job? We want justice for our sister and every woman whose case gets ignored.”
Pattern of unsolved GBV cases
The family also pointed to the recent murder of Nelly from Bizana, who was raped and dumped on the roadside earlier this year. Forensic samples were collected, but the suspect still walks free. As a result, they fear Hlobokazi’s case will follow the same path.
“We are dying in the hands of the system. Our loved ones deserve justice.”
